About IP addresses
What is an IP address?
The number the internet uses to send data back to you. Your internet provider gives it to your router or your phone. Every site and app you connect to sees it.
Can someone find my home from my IP?
Not your street. An IP address usually points to a city or region and to your provider. Only the provider knows which customer had the address at a given time, and it gives that out only under legal process.
Why is the location wrong?
Location databases are built from estimates. Mobile networks often route through a hub city, so the result can be a few hundred kilometres off. With a VPN on, you'll see the VPN server's details instead of yours.
What is the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?
IPv4 addresses look like 91.64.187.23, IPv6 like 2a02:810d:4b3f::1. IPv6 is the newer, longer format. Many networks give you both, and sites use whichever your device prefers.
How do I hide my IP address on iPhone?
Use a VPN: sites then see the VPN server's address instead of yours. iCloud Private Relay hides it in Safari only, for iCloud+ subscribers. "Limit IP Address Tracking" in Wi-Fi settings hides it from known trackers in Mail and Safari, but not from the sites themselves.
