Five causes cover almost every case. Find the one that matches what you see.
The Wi-Fi wants you to sign in first
What you see
You're on hotel, café, airport or train Wi-Fi. Pages don't load and the VPN won't come up.
Why
These networks let nothing through until you accept their terms on a sign-in page. A VPN can't connect before that.
Fix
Turn the VPN off.
Open Safari and go to any simple site, such as captive.apple.com. The sign-in page should appear. If it doesn't, go to Settings → Wi-Fi and tap the network name.
Accept the terms, then turn the VPN back on.
Hideon spots this and shows an “Open sign-in page” button. It finishes connecting by itself once you're through.
Another VPN app is active
What you see
The VPN switches on and then off, or another app's name appears in Settings → VPN.
Why
iPhone runs only one VPN at a time. If another app has “Connect On Demand”, it keeps taking over.
Fix
Turn off the VPN in the other app.
Go to Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN, open the other profile and turn off Connect On Demand. Or delete the profile.
The VPN was never allowed
What you see
Nothing happens when you tap Connect, or you tapped “Don't Allow” on the first prompt.
Why
iPhone only turns on a VPN you have allowed once. Allow only adds Hideon to Settings → VPN.
Fix
Open Hideon, tap Connect and choose Allow. iPhone may ask for your passcode; it never leaves your phone.
No prompt at all? A work profile or Screen Time settings may lock VPN settings on this iPhone. Check Settings → Screen Time.
Connected, but it's slow
What you see
The VPN icon is on, but pages open slowly.
Why
Usually a weak signal or a busy server.
Fix
Pick another server in Hideon.
On a weak signal, try Turbo mode.
Turn Airplane Mode on and off, then connect again.
Hideon checks the connection after connecting, and moves to the next fastest server if it's slow.
No location answers
What you see
Every location times out, on every network.
Why
This one may be on our side.
Fix
Wait a minute and try again.
