The short version

  1. Your iPhone

Encrypts everything before it leaves the phone

  2. Wi-Fi or mobile network

Sees that you use a VPN, not what you do

  3. Hideon server

Unwraps the traffic and sends it on

  4. The website

Sees the server's address, not yours

Without a VPN, the Wi-Fi owner and your internet provider can see which sites you open, and every site sees your IP address, which points to your city and provider.

Connection modes

You pick a mode by what it does, not by protocol name. Every mode encrypts all your traffic.

Auto

Picks the fastest for you

Measures the connection and switches between Standard and Turbo to keep it fast and steady.

Turbo

Fastest on weak and mobile networks

Hysteria 2 over QUIC. Keeps its speed when the network loses packets.

Standard

Built into iPhone, easy on the battery

IKEv2, the VPN protocol iOS supports natively. Fast and light.

Turbo and Double VPN are part of Premium. Standard is free on the free locations.

Double VPN

Your traffic goes through two Hideon servers in a row and is encrypted twice. The entry server sees you but not the sites. The exit server sees the sites but not you. By default the entry is the fastest server for you, and the exit is the location you picked.

Kill Switch and Auto-protect

Kill Switch cuts the internet if the VPN drops, so apps don't quietly carry on without it. Auto-protect connects by itself when you join any Wi-Fi, and, if you like, on mobile data too.
